Cooking for a Better Start

Helping families cook healthy meals on a budget

What is Cooking for a Better Start?

Cooking for a Better Start teaches parents and carers how to cook a range of healthy, low-cost meals for their family.

Led by an experienced practitioner, small groups learn over six weekly sessions in local community settings. There is also an option to complete an online version of the course.

What difference does Cooking for a Better Start make?

Cooking for a Better Start gives parents and carers invaluable skills, knowledge and confidence that will last a lifetime. By the end of the six weeks they will:

  • Know how to eat well for less
  • Have cooked at least six healthy, low-cost meals from scratch
  • Understand more about what foods are healthy, portion sizes, reading food labels and planning shopping and healthy food swaps
  • Feel more confident as parents and build peer relationships

It is a great introduction to the Better Start Bradford family of projects and a lovely way to meet other local families. Attendees receive a cooking-related gift at the end of each session and certificate when they complete the course.

In the longer term – along with the HENRY project – we expect Cooking for a Better Start to contribute to reductions in the number of overweight/obese children in the Better Start Bradford area at age 2, 5 and 11.

I always use my measuring spoons to measure the recommended levels of oil when cooking and use a lot of the recipes covered in the course. We also now have a lot more vegetables with our meals and I regularly make the yummy healthy muffin pizzas!
