I CAN

October 2018 to December 2022

The I CAN project was a series of training sessions, guidance and support for childcare practitioners designed to improve the language environment for young children attending early years settings.

It was developed from the nationally developed I CAN Early Talk modules and accreditation, and enabled settings to gain an award and an endorsement of their good practice in speech, language and communication.

It was delivered as part of the Better Start Bradford programme from 2018 to 2022 by BHT Education and Training.

How the project was delivered

Training was delivered to practitioners in settings providing childcare and early education under the two-year-old funding scheme.

The aim was to provide information and guidance to practitioners on the importance of early language skills, how to support them, and how to identify children in need of additional support. Additionally, the accreditation scheme allowed settings to demonstrate their commitment to supporting young children’s early language development.

Feedback

"The training was really good - it refreshed some stuff which we knew, but also gives us some more ideas now to support children’s speech problems."

"I feel I have learnt a lot about how to recognise speech, language and communication needs and how to deal with them."

"All aspects were really useful and will be included into my own practice. It highlighted the importance of specific observations and the tracking of children's speech. It also gave reassurance to follow your gut instinct and not wait to long before referring children earlier rather than later."

“Very impressed with the quality and amount of resources we have to use for the interventions. The big manual is great, planning is all there for you - saves me a job as a teacher."
