Forest School Play Project

April 2018 to March 2024

Play

The Forest School Play Project was an adventurous nature-based play programme that brought an array of learning opportunities for three-year-olds, their families and the early years workforce.

Based on the Forest School model, it was redesigned by Better Start Bradford and Get Out More to meet the needs of this younger age group. Get Out More delivered the project from 2018 to 2024. Watch the beautiful video above for a flavour of the project and the benefits it has brought.

This project was delivered by Get Out More

How the project was delivered

Working with early years settings in the Better Start Bradford area, Get Out More took three-year-olds out to local woodlands and greenspaces to learn through active play, crafts, games and exploration – in all weathers. They worked with settings to improve their resources for outdoor play, including equipment and grounds development.

They also delivered Forest School training to staff, volunteers and parents/carers, and ran weekly outdoor fun, family play sessions for families with 0-3s in parks across the Better Start Bradford area.

Feedback

"One of our children was non-verbal and didn’t speak a word when she was in nursery. Since coming to the forest school sessions - and without the pressure of the classroom - she has found the confidence to start speaking to classmates and staff."

"Initially in nursery it was the physical development we saw - how confident they became such as walking on different levels and climbing on fallen trees - then their communications skills and the relationships between the children. After 10 weeks of the Forest School Play Project they were best friends inside and outside."

"These sessions are wonderful. My child is really enjoying being outdoors and is really interested in learning about the birds and nests. I know it's better for my child to be outside in the fresh air with nature where they can explore and learn new things. I feel better when I am outside too."

"One child, who struggled with the transition of leaving parents in a morning, built enough independence to attend each session independently and join in successfully with all of the activities offered."
