Despite the easing of COVID-19 restrictions earlier in the year we’re continuing to support families in the Better Start Bradford area through a mix of phone / video calls and virtual events, with more face-to-face activities being re-introduced by several of our project teams.

Baby Steps

The Baby Steps programme is being delivered to families virtually and the team continues to take new referrals – you can download the referral form here (Word).

Better Place

The team is delivering lots of outdoor sessions in local parks and greenspaces. Follow their Facebook page for up-to-date details.

Better Start Imagine

If you have a child aged 0-3 and live in the Better Start Bradford area you can still sign up to receive a free book every month until your child’s fifth birthday. Sign up here.
– Some face-to-face (socially-distanced) story and rhyme time and baby club sessions are now running! Visit the Better Start Imagine Facebook group for up-to-date details or visit our events calendar.


Bradford Doulas

Bradford Doulas offer (non-clinical) practical and emotional support to pregnant women/birthing people six weeks before, during labour and six weeks after the birth.  Support can be delivered within the home, community, or a mutually agreed location through trained and accredited Volunteer Doulas. Acting as a ‘professional friend’, Volunteer Doulas will support the individual to make positive and informed choices, accompany them to appointments, provide practical support at the birth, build positive relationships with other services and offer emotional support.
Referrals can be made by any service working with pregnant women and families from 28+ gestation (including midwives, GPs, Health Visitors and voluntary community organisations).  Pregnant women/people can also self-refer.

Breastfeeding Support

The team continues to provide practical and emotional support for families who are breastfeeding/mixing bottle and breastfeeding, currently over the phone and via video calls. They are still taking new referrals from health professionals and families via the contact details above.


Cooking for a Better Start

ESOL for Pregnancy

The team continues to take referrals via this online referral form or by e-mail to [email protected] and are delivering sessions remotely, primarily via Zoom – visit our events calendar for dates.


Forest School Play Project

– The team continues to run 10-week forest school programmes with local nurseries.  They also offer regular family play sessions in local parks and nurseries open to families with children aged 0-3 years. There’s no need to book, just come along – to see the latest sessions visit Get Out More’s website or the Better Start Bradford events calendar.


HAPPY

– Pregnant women in the Better Start Bradford area can now sign up for the new, online HAPPY antenatal programme. HAPPY antenatal is a free and friendly 8-week programme for women of all ages living in the Better Start Bradford area. The sessions are a relaxed way for parents to think about their transition to parenthood and challenges for every parent around healthy lifestyles.

HENRY

The HENRY team is offering a number of virtual groups and workshops and is starting to deliver some sessions face-to-face – visit our events calendar for dates and details.
They are also accepting referrals for 1-to-1 support, which will also be delivered over the phone/video call. Please note, there is a waiting list for this.

Home-Start Better Start

Families already receiving support will be supported via weekly telephone calls.
– Service is operating as normal, with families returning to receiving weekly visits from volunteers. Referrals can be made online through their referral portal.
– They continue to recruit new volunteers and have volunteer preparation courses in the pipeline – visit our calendar to find current dates


ICAN Early Talk

This project has been extended to allow it to train and accredit all the settings within the Better Start Bradford area who want to take part. Training and support is now being offered face-to-face.


Incredible Years

The team is back running face-to-face parenting courses within the community and online courses are still available. Please visit our events calendar for dates, or contact them via the details above.
They welcome new referrals either directly from families or from professionals.


Little Minds Matter

The team has resumed some face-to-face support and is accepting new referrals via healthcare professionals as usual.
– The team is also available to professionals for reflective discussions and consultation. Please contact them using the details above.


MECSH

– The MECSH (maternal early childhood sustained home-visiting) programme continues to be delivered in the family home by health visitors in the Bradford East team.

– COVID screening questions will be asked before all face-to-face contacts and PPE will be used by health visitors.

– We may also offer video or telephone calls or an appointment in a clinic setting where appropriate and this will be discussed with the family so that we can find out what method of contact is best for them.

Perinatal Support Service

The Perinatal Support Service co-ordinators and volunteers are supporting families over the phone or via video calls, and they welcome any new referrals via the contact details above.
– The team is also running regular ‘My Baby and Me’ group sessions who are struggling with mild to moderate perinatal mental health such as depression, low mood, anxiety and isolation. Their baby must be aged under one year. You can refer via the contact details above.

All Welcome to the World antenatal courses have been cancelled until further notice.
If you’re pregnant you may be able to take part in the HAPPY Virtual Antenatal Programme (see details above).
