Express an interest in latest Better Start Bradford projects

Better Start Bradford is looking for organisations to deliver key projects we will be putting out to tender in September. Better Start Bradford is a Big Lottery funded project, working in the three Bradford wards of Bradford Moor, Bowling and Barkerend and Little Horton to improve outcomes for children aged 0-3, including pregnancy. We have developed a new approach to tendering supported by eMBED and we will invite all organisations who respond to this Expression of Interest to tender for the project they are interested in. Tendering for Better Start Bradford projects is restricted to Voluntary and Community Sector organisations who are legally constituted.

Project 1 – Cook & Eat.

Cooking for a Better Start is part of the Eat, Live, Love theme of Better Start Bradford. The intention of the project is to offer practical cooking sessions to increase confidence in preparing healthy meals and improve the families’ knowledge of healthy meals. This project will also aim to engage parents into the full range of projects offered in the theme through signposting to enhance their knowledge and parenting behaviours further. The project will be offered across the Better Start Bradford (BSB) area to parents of children under 4 years of age and delivered by HENRY core trained facilitators with practical cooking, food hygiene and facilitation training in community venues with cooking and crèche facilities.

Contract period          Three years delivery plus three months set-up from 1 January 2018

Contract value            £110,000

Project 2 – Forest Schools

Forest Schools is a project that aims to engage very young children (0-3’s) with the natural environment. Forest School activities will be delivered by a qualified level three, Forest Schools practitioner and supported by trainee practitioners as a programme of ten sessions over a ten-week period. The year one programme will focus on environmental activities targeted at three year olds, initially in nursery settings and then in suitable outdoors settings. It is proposed that the FS programme will be rolled out to families with children aged 0-3 over the following two years. Year one of the project will be used to test the viability and benefits of offering a FS programme for children in the 0-2 age group. Suitable outdoors settings   include local neighbourhood greenspaces, parks, woodlands, community gardens and other potential locations. We are looking for a provider to deliver the initial pilot phase and work with BSB to develop and expand the programme in years two and three.

Project 3 – Pre-Schoolers in the Playground

The PiP programme aims to increase levels of physical activity and reduce levels of obesity in pre-school children aged 18 months to 4 years old by changing the culture of school playgrounds. The programme has been developed by researchers at the Bradford Institute for Health Research, University of York and University of Durham. PiP is a ten-week programme of six facilitated 30 minute sessions that will be offered to all children under four years and their families. Three programmes per school will be offered over an academic year. Whilst it is anticipated that it will benefit families where they attend schools to drop off older siblings the programme will also be open to all families in the local area. Year one of this project will be a pilot phase delivering programmes in two schools within the BSB area. We are looking for a provider that can co-ordinate delivery in the first instance and work with BSB to expand the programme in years two and three.
