Crafty Kids learn to cook thanks to Better Start Bradford

Thanks to Parents in the Lead funding, a group of parents from St Stephen’s Primary School, West Bowling have been able to put on a huge variety of creative activities for under fours through their Crafty Kids Project.

Crafty Kids received £1,429 to run a series of monthly family learning activity sessions including: wheelbarrow making, creating fairy gardens, puppet making, cook and eat sessions and circus skills. The creative activities are all designed to help kick-start the children’s education by supporting the curriculum delivered in the school.

Tracey Hillam, who runs Crafty Kids together with other parents, said: “Thanks to the Parents in the Lead funding, we have been able to put on a wide range of activities for the children including making puppet shows, wheelbarrow making, creating memory boxes, cook and eat sessions and we have even got an upcoming circus skills session.

The children were eating it faster than they could make it!

“We’ve had most parents and their children attend every session: it has been really busy. We run some of the sessions ourselves, however, we have been able to pay for sessional workers to come in to run activities. For example the cook and eat sessions are run by the Bradford division of Jamie Oliver’s Ministry of Food. This week we have made pancakes and fruit and last week we made pan fried salmon tikka – the children were eating it faster than they could make it!”

Just go for it – you have nothing to lose.

“If you are a parent and you have a great project idea for under fours, I would recommend that you apply to Better Start Bradford’s Parents in the Lead. Just go for it – you have nothing to lose. Parents and their children are coming together and having fun. The school has been really supportive and we have such a great team of proactive parents. We found the application process extremely easy; once you have your idea the application form is really straightforward.”

One of the participating mums Bethany Taylor, 24, mum to Zayan, 4 and Aleena, 2, said: “The cook and eat session has been really good. It has taught my children about food safety and healthy eating. Zayan has had lots of fun cooking and eating with his friends.”
