HENRY: An eight-week course or one-to-one sessions supporting families with young children to develop healthy lifestyles
HENRY is an eight-week course for parents with babies and toddlers under five. It aims to help develop healthy lifestyle habits including food, activity, and families’ daily routines. It is provided in small groups of up to 12 parents in local community and children’s centres, or it can be provided on a one-to-one basis in the home, offering flexibility for parents. It has been shown to be highly effective in helping families with young children to live healthy lifestyles. Many parents describe it as life-changing.
Who will benefit? Any family with a child under five years in the Better Start Bradford area can benefit. Check if you’re in our area using our postcode checker.
Where and when is it delivered? HENRY takes place regularly in Family Hubs and Community Centres across the Better Start Bradford area. See our calendar, or contact Nicola on[email protected] or 07709 640454 for details of courses or to find out about HENRY one-to-one.
Who provides it? HENRY is a national charity working in partnership with Better Start Bradford to provide this and other activities in our area to support a healthy start in life.
HENRY aims to help improve families’ health, by helping parents and young children together adopt healthier habits. It aims to reduce the ‘health inequalities’ experienced by many families in our area. It shares key strategies, advice, tips and information on healthy eating for young children and the whole family, lifestyle habits, physical activity, and other habits that can improve health and well-being.
Families are asked to complete a lifestyle questionnaire before and after taking part to help gather evidence on the impact on local families and to enable lessons to be shared across Bradford and beyond.

HENRY is one of more than 20 projects being provided by Better Start Bradford for pregnant women and families with children under four in Little Horton, Bowling and Barkerend and Bradford Moor.
Gemma Priestley, mum of two year-old Logan, says:
“I have done other courses, but HENRY has stuck. The great thing is that they don’t tell you what to do, they simply present you with ideas and you do what you want with them.”
“I did the course because I just wanted a healthier balance for my family. You don’t get judged and I think everyone who does the course will take something away from it that they didn’t consider before starting it. Thanks to HENRY, I feel a lot more confident as a parent, and have learned a lot of things that we can do together as a family to be healthier.”
