Some people join the Better Start Bradford family and very quickly become indispensable. Maryiam is one such individual. She has experienced Better Start Bradford as both a participant and volunteer, and is grateful for the abundance of opportunities it has brought. We are equally grateful to her for all the time and effort she puts into helping us, and to mark Volunteers’ Week 2018 we’d like to say a huge big thank you to Maryiam and all the other people who give their time for families with children under four in Bowling and Barkerend, Bradford Moor and Little Horton.
I am 44 years old – married and a mum of two boys (23 and 14) and two girls (21 and 15). I’m also a grandma to three boys (3, 2 and 10 months) and my first granddaughter is due in June 2018.
In April 2017 I became a HENRY Parent Champion. This is something I’m very passionate about and I always carry HENRY leaflets with me and love doing events and engaging with other parents and grandparents. At the end of 2017 I was recognised for getting the most parents signed up.
Being involved with Better Start Bradford has opened many doors for me. I’ve attended an Older Yet Wiser course designed for grandparents and made some friends for life. I learnt plenty of tips across a wide range of areas, had homework every week and had a new activity to try out with my grandson. I still use these now with my grandsons. As a grandparent it’s very important to have access to courses like this as we play key roles in our grandchildren’s lives.
I recently attended a Better Start Bradford event and learnt so much. Soon I will be helping out at a lunchbox event and storytelling and rhyme time which I’m really looking forward to.
