Getting outdoors with twins

06 June 2024

When Ahwasia, 31, mum of twins, aged 3 came across a Better Place session on a poster via a Bradford WhatsApp group, she decided to give it ago, despite the challenges of getting both her young children out and about.

Ahwasia’s Story

Getting out and about with my daughter and son can be quite a daunting experience when you are alone with twins, so when I came across the Better Place poster with organised outdoors activities, I thought that I would give it a go.

We loved it so much that we kept coming back!

We went along to the Better Place Nature Nurture session at the Neighbourhood Resource Centre on Ventnor Street in BD3 and we had such a fun time getting involved in outside craft activities such as mud painting, potion mixing and making stick wands.

We loved it so much that we kept coming back! As a mum I have really enjoyed the consistency of the weekly activities and open access to everyone. The sessions are at parks and green spaces around my area, such as Peel Park, Attock Park and the Mayfield Pocket Park. We love playing at different outdoor settings and having a safe space to take my children to with open access to all the resources. We have also loved bonding with other families.

Friends and family are always positively commenting on my photos and asking me about where we are and what we are doing.

Each session is set up really well with different things to do – you can tell that a great deal of creative thought has gone into developing the outdoor play activities, so that participants can connect with each other as well as focus on the children’s development.

Both of my children look forward to attending every session and have loved messy play, playing with mud, toasting marshmallows, wand making and much more. I take lots of photos of them doing activities and friends and family are always positively commenting on the photos and asking me about where we are and what we are doing.

I’m a firm believer in getting kids outside whatever the weather to enjoy all the different seasons and what nature has to offer. It’s also good for children’s development too. I enjoy having many discussions with friends and family about this and encouraging them to get their kids outside too.
