Better Start Bradford Legacy: Prioritisation Event - 30 January 2025

20 February 2025

In October 2024, Better Start Bradford appointed a collaborative led by Community Action Bradford and District (CABAD) to deliver consultancy support to shape the programme’s legacy following a nine-month extension of the programme to 31 December 2025.

During the first phase of work, they consulted with 189 stakeholders, partners and families from across the Bradford district regarding the potential legacy options for Better Start Bradford.

In summary, the focus of the work is:

  • Establishing views of a wide range of stakeholders through engagement, consultation and research
  • Scoping possible futures based on existing work and programme aspirations
  • Identifying emerging options and developing an options appraisal
  • Testing for viability, realism and avoiding duplication
  • Develop an implementation plan

At an event held on 30 January 2025 at the Park Lane Centre, they updated over 50 stakeholders and partners on the legacy appraisals review process, headline findings, and the challenges around sustainability. Attendees were presented four options and asked to rank them. This was followed by a roundtable discussion on each option and key considerations. There was an opportunity for those who were unable to attend to respond anonymously. CABAD will now be looking at recommendations on the range of possible options, including:

  • The purpose, role and activities of a legacy organisation or function
  • Recommending a preferred option and outlining its main purpose and activities
  • Developing an action plan and timeline for the change once an option has been agreed by the Better Start Bradford team and partnership board
  • Drafting the necessary documentation and supporting the actions to achieve the change (e.g. terms of reference, remit, partnership arrangements etc
  • Working with Better Start Bradford on how to make the accumulated learning and assets of the programme available and useable in the future

About Better Start Bradford

Better Start Bradford is a 10-year programme (2015-2025) funded by The National Lottery Community Fund to help children in Bowling and Barkerend, Bradford Moor and Little Horton get the best start in life. We developed more than 22 projects for pregnant women and families with children aged under four. The projects aimed to improve children’s social and emotional development, communication and language development and nutrition.

Better Start Bradford is one of five A Better Start (ABS) programmes  in England set up and funded by The National Lottery Community Fund from 2015-2025. The other ABS sites are Blackpool, Lambeth, Nottingham and Southend.

The Better Start Bradford programme is now in its 10th year (from 1 April 2024) and is planning for sustainability of its services and the securing of the Better Start Bradford legacy.  This contract with CABAD will be key to explore the next stage of Better Start Bradford and its legacy.
