Better Place's Lovely Bug Ball

30 March 2025

Over 200 families, with many young children dressed as ladybirds, bees, butterflies and mini beasts, attended Better Place Bradford’s Lovely Bug Ball at Bowling Park and Bolling Hall Museum on Sunday 6 March 2025.

There was a wealth of bug related activities for families with 0-5s to do including flower crafts, forest school fun, a bug hunt, constructing bug homes and bug hotels in a mug, bug wings making, meeting live bugs, bee crafts, hedgehog crafts and making wooden beasties and much more all washed down with a mug of free hot chocolate from The Lodge Café thanks to the event organisers.

Families were also treated to musical accompaniment in the form of live band Mishra performing folk music, Nasheeds Islamic music performed reciting passages of the Quran using a Daff, which is a type of drum, and upbeat cello and violin playing by Concerteenies. To complete the day, families were entertained by butterflies on stilts and a dragonfly sculpture designed by performing violinist, Pam, held a majestic presence overlooking all the fun.

Adele Adams, Better Place Project Manager said:

Watching so many little ones dressed as bugs and beasties at the Lovely Bug Ball was truly wonderful. It's heartwarming to see their excitement and curiosity as they dive into hands-on activities, learning about the wonders of the natural world in such a fun and engaging way.

Thanks to Natural England funding and Bradford Council's Spring Grant, Raven Staging and all the local organisations that came and ran activities, Better Place were able to offer an unforgettable experience for families that hopefully sparks a lifelong connection to nature.

Better Place have been working their magic across the Better Start Bradford area of Bowling and Barkerend, Bradford Moor and Little Horton and have invested over £2million so far to improve the environment and outdoor play spaces for families with 0-3s since 2016.
